There is little New Year cheer for the Taliban in Babaji, as British troops are doing what they do best to secure the area for the good of local people.

Soldiers from the 1st Batallion Coldstream Guards are taking on the enemy and establishing their dominance to allow others to begin reconstruction and development.

As part of operation LION’S LEAP, troops were dropped behind Taliban lines Chinook helicopters so they could engage the local population and stop the enemy from spreading its message.

Major Toby Till, officer commanding Number One Company Group, said what the soldiers are doing is very important.

"Certainly this area is fairly immature in terms of Helmand for how long ISAF [International Security Assistance Force] troops have been down here … so one of the most important things is for us to understand the local population," he added.

Speaking in an interview with the British Forces Broadcasting Service, the prime minister Gordon Brown said British soldiers are doing the right thing by taking the fight to the Taliban in Afghanistan.
