The prime minister was addressing the troops on the final day of his visit to the country and announced the service men and women serving in overseas operations would have their allowance doubled, the Daily Express reports.

He said this will be paid from next month and will be backdated to May 6th, which was when the general election took place.

As well as the financial revelations, the Conservative leader expressed his and the nation’s pride in Britain’s Armed Forces.

"What you are doing here will never be forgotten. It is great and important work. You are incredibly brave and professional in what you do," he told the crowds.

Earlier in the week, Mr Cameron reassured the soldiers on the front line this is a war of necessity and one that is vital to ensure the safety of people at home.
