A 91-year-old man has raised over £3,000 for the Wiltshire-based charity Help for Heroes by climbing Mount Snowdon.

Allen Birch took three hours to complete the trek, which is also the fourth time he has done it, the Worcester News reports.

In the past five years he has collected over £9,000 for charitable organisations and he plans to do it all again in 2012.

"My daughter Des chose Help for Heroes and we spent three months collecting the sponsorship money," Mr Birch observed.

He is to be given an award at Wolverhampton Wanderers' Molineux stadium in December to reflect the impact he has had on the local community with his expeditions.

Mr Birch took part in the second world war, being posted in Egypt and Germany with the Royal Engineers and he has confirmed all of the cash he receives next year will go to the Midlands Air Ambulance service.
