Everyone has heard the expression cat and mouse game to describe when a person is in pursuit of someone or something else.
However, a feline from Grass Valley in Nevada showed this saying is steeped in truth after taking part in an elongated game of hunt, the Daily Mail reports.
The two-year-old, who is called Dexter, was seen to be chasing a mouse around his owner Angelo DeSantis' garden as he sought some prey.
Mr DeSantis – a keen photographer – was on hand to take a few shoots of the moggy throwing the unlucky creature around.
"He was playing with it just like he does with his stuffed toys. I was lucky enough to capture Dexter throwing the mouse into the air," the man said of his pet.
Mr DeSanctis stated it was the first time he had seen the cat play with his food like that.
You can't help but feel sorry for the mouse, but this is survival of the fittest in action.
