Veronica Candy told the Ely Standard that she is "very proud and pleased" that her son’s work in Afghanistan has been recognised.
Captain Owen Candy has been commended for his quick thinking under fire, as well as his bravery during the major Operation Panther’s Claw last summer.
When his company headquarters were hit by an improvised explosive device (IED), his commander sustained severe wounds.
Cpt Candy, then the most senior officer left on the ground, took command and withdrew the troops to a secure location, ensuring the soldiers were physically and mentally ready for the following morning.
He also administered first aid to wounded soldiers when another IED hit the headquarters.
"Owen is a very capable and reliable man and exactly the sort of person you would want around in such a situation as the one the men found themselves in," said his mum.
A brave army pooch and his handler, Private Steve Purdy, may also be honoured with the canine equivalent of the Victoria Cross for saving the lives of UK soldiers in Afghanistan.
The Daily Mail reported that Chocolat, a Belgian shepherd, may receive a Dickin Medal for helping the heroes clear a safe route around a trap of IEDs.
