Queen decorates brave soldier with the George Cross medal

A heroic soldier has been decorated with the George Cross medal by the Queen.

Staff Sergeant Kim Hughes, of The Royal Logistics Corps, was presented with the honour, which is the highest bravery award for valour not in the presence of the enemy, for his bomb disposal successes in Afghanistan, the Shropshire Star reports.

The soldier’s actions have been described as the "single most outstanding act of explosive ordnance disposal" recorded in Afghanistan.

On three occasions he put himself in extreme danger to manually defuse a number of devices in an effort to make safe passage for wounded soldiers near the Afghan town of Sangin last year.

Staff Sergeant Hughes was joined at the Buckingham Palace ceremony by his mother, brother and sister-in-law.

Lance Corporal Wayne Flood and Lance Corporal Andrew Armitage were both recently honoured for their heroics in Afghanistan, as each received special mentions at a medals parade for troops of the 2nd Battalion the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.
