The Ministry of Defence has confirmed members of 40 Commando have been using the Sharpshooter rifle on the front line in Helmand Province for around two weeks.

It is the first new combat rifle to be introduced in 20 years and will allow troops to shoot more accurately from further distances.

Sergeant Baz Evans, of 40 Commando, spoke highly of the new product.

"The new sharpshooter rifle provides quick and accurate fire, with the flexibility of using it in the assault rifle roll as well. It’s hoofing," he remarked.

More than 400 of the guns were purchased for £1.5 million in January as an urgent operational requirement.

The Ministry of Defence recently confirmed a fleet of upgraded Lynx Mk9A helicopters, which include an M3M machine gun, have been despatched to patrol the skies above Afghanistan.
