Heroic troops have been rewarded for the bravery they have shown while serving their country.

Recognition has been given to 131 members of the armed forces for their contribution between October 2009 and April 2010.

One such troop was Lance Corporal James McKie, from the 3rd Battalion the Rifles, who received the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

Mr McKie said he felt guilty to have been singled out for the accolade, but remarked: "I've come to realise that the medal is a celebration of what we did out there – it's for everyone, it's not just for me."

Another serviceman to be honoured was Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune.

The pilot was handed the Distinguished Flying Cross for transporting six wounded troops to safety in a Chinook helicopter.

James Burtonwood, Carl Nicholson and Neil Cresswell recently showed their support for servicemen and women by walking barefooted for 14.7 miles to raise money for Help for Heroes.
