A 17-year-old boy has challenged himself to eat one pound of haggis in record time in an event that raised money for Help for Heroes.

John Davis won the Edinburgh International Haggis Championship and is now waiting to hear whether he has set a new world record, reports Press Association.

"The hardest thing was that you couldn't even have any water with it," the teenager explains.

A number of Scottish stars have praised his actions, including Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus, who called it "an incredible achievement".

It took Mr Davis just two minutes to complete the pile of haggis, despite the fact he had not undertaken any training for the occasion.

Craig and Charlie Reid from the Proclaimers – who have had hits such as I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) and I'm on My Way – congratulated the youngster and said he had undertaken an "amazing feat of endurance".
