A fleet of hundreds of Minis is gearing up for a Help for Heroes event that aims to show support for soldiers injured or killed on duty.

Owners of the cars will drive from the Cotswolds to Wootton Bassett, known for being the location of many armed forces repatriations, Thisisgloucestershire reports.

Boyband Westlife – known for hits such as Flying Without Wings and What About Now – have issued their support for the event, planned by Gerry Watkins.

"It's mad but when I get an email from someone in the forces saying they've lost a loved one and obviously need help, it makes it all worthwhile," Mr Watkins said.

There are already 800 cars signed up for the drive and the organiser says he hopes he will beat the total raised last year, which stood at £10,000.

Other celebrities who have pledged their support include Chris Evans and Stephen Fry, who have donated prizes to go up for auction.
