Single soldiers who lack the confidence to meet women could find they learn a thing or two from self-help books.

This is the suggestion of Coleen Nolan, writing an advice column in the Daily Mirror, who replied to a man who is 30 and has never been in a relationship.

He admits he finds it hard to talk to ladies and is scared of rejection, but does not want to be lonely in old age.

Nolan says: "I know a lot of people who've benefited from self-help books to give them confidence and it's changed their lives."

Another option that could suit such individuals is online dating, as it allows people to get to know others before meeting face-to-face.

This might be ideal for those who do not like the thought of heading to bars and trying to chat up a member of the opposite sex, yet are still looking to enter into a relationship.
