Army penpals could find they strike up a long friendship with their correspondent, as many people bond with the person they are writing to.

This was certainly the case for Lorraine Pidduck, a reader of Canada's London Free Press, who contacted the publication to reveal just how long she has kept in touch with her penpal.

She did so after reading an article that featured a pair who had been writing to each other for 60 years and Ms Pidduck says she can surpass this figure.

"My pen pal in England and I have been writing to each other since June 1948, which is soon to be 63 years of correspondence," the reader reveals.

And the correspondents have shared many special occasions over the years, as well as meeting up in person during visits to each country.

Penpals Glenna Godinsky and Bronwen Layfield recently met for the first time after 36 years of keeping in touch and said the experience was like meeting a "long-lost relative", the Courier-News reported.
