Single soldiers planning to set up an online dating profile may like to bear in mind that the purpose of such an account is to make them stand out from the crowd.

US-based artist and performer R Luke Dubois – who has created a series of maps of people around the country showing how they describe themselves – told ABC News that users are keen to be noticed and as such they are open and honest about their history, interests and aspirations.

"It's really fascinating," he observed. "You have to describe yourself for the express purpose of being liked."

Mr Dubois went on to note that it is also important to make sure the ideal partner a person is looking for is also described in enough detail "to make a connection".

Journal Now correspondent Amy Alkon also recently offered some advice, telling prospective daters that it is essential people look at the activity as a fun one and they should not be in a hurry to find out too much information at first.
