A soldier who is preparing to head to Afghanistan has taken part in a course where he learned to prepare a two-course meal for 20 troops.

Tom Woodward from Burntwood had to use the contents of two ten-man standard ration packs to cook up the feast, the Lichfield Mercury reports.

He admitted it was a far more difficult challenge than he expected, particularly because different dietary requirements had to be taken into account.

"I don't know how these guys do it day in day out, preparing a varied amount of meals out of rations for so many soldiers," Mr Woodward said.

Exercise Halberd Caterer is designed especially for this purpose, with soldiers taught to use ingredients such as tinned fruit, powdered milk, beef mince and chocolate bars to put on a buffet-style meal.

Another troop who is learning new skills is Michael Collins from Nantwich, who recently hosted a charity auction to raise funds for Help for Heroes before his return to duty, the Crew Guardian revealed.
