A former soldier is to take part in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon in an effort to raise money for brave soldiers injured while fighting for their country.

Gordon Sustins will tackle the 26-mile endurance challenge to generate funds for Help for Heroes – and will be doing so while wearing full army gear, the Hamilton Advertiser reports.

The 36-year-old, who served with the Royal Signals for 11 years, is aiming to raise in the region of £5,000 for the armed forces charity.

He described Help for Heroes as a "huge" body and claimed it "is a massive help for people to get back on their feet and be as independent and lead as normal a life as possible after being injured".

Another fundraiser looking to raise money for the cause is Laura Crick, who will be attempting to complete the Base Camp Mount Everest Trek in November this year.
