A dragon boating organisation has held a special racing day to generate funds for brave soldiers who have been wounded while serving their country.

More than £2,000 was raised by Pershore Phoenix Dragon Boating Club, after it stated it was inspired to take action after seeing the sacrifices made by Britain's troops, Worcester News reports.

Chairman of the group Keith Burton – who is also a Worcester city councillor – noted he decided to push ahead with the event after seeing servicemen and women march past the city's Guildhall.

He observed: "The day was a great success, with racers and spectators alike having great fun while raising money for an excellent cause."

Victors of the contest were the Royal Rogues from Worcestershire Royal Hospital, with second place going to a team from Elisabeth The Chef.

Brian Tinnion, a firefighter from Tyneside, recently climbed to Mount Everest's Base Camp to raise £26,000 for Help for Heroes, Chronicle Live reported.
