People using online dating – such as single soldiers – may want to take their time when trying to coerce somebody who has taken their fancy, as diving straight in could be a little off-putting.

This is according to Chicago Now journalist Jessica Downey, who advised guys to refrain from giving their telephone number to a girl in the first message.

The expert said she is all for bold moves when it comes to internet courtship, but warned asking a woman to text or phone with little prior communication could be a wrong move.

She explained: "The point is – I need a couple of messages, a little interaction. A chance to get a little more comfortable."

It is difficult for men to hand their numbers out straight away and not seem a little too pushy, Ms Downey added.

In a recent article for the Huffington Post, psychotherapist Meg Schneider suggested the web can offer endless potential when choosing a suitor.
