A student has set up a society at her university to support the UK's troops.

Seonaid Holsgrove organised the group – the first of its kind in the nation – at Strathclyde University to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity, Deadline News reports.

The 21-year-old said she wanted to form the body to show respect for the troops serving overseas and a stall set up to attract donations for the cause has already collected £223.40.

She noted: "The society is to give people like me an outlet and let people know that there is a place supporting the guys."

As well as the collection point, the team has organised an army-themed pub crawl and is to stage a black-tie ball with an I Love My Heroes theme on Valentine's Day next year.

The Help for Heroes cause and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal recently benefitted when over £600 was raised for the organisations through a jive dancing event that took place at Waterlooville Community Centre in Portsmouth, the Portsmouth News reported.
