A group of 14 cyclists from Cumbria have helped raise money to support soldiers by taking part in a sponsored bike ride.

According to the News Post Leader, the individuals cycled from Blyth to Wooler and back again – a round trip of approximately 80 miles – as part of a series of events lined up to generate funds for Help for Heroes.

The ride raised £625 and Bill Armstrong, one of those who took part, said the cash will be put towards their overall target of £2,000.

"We all feel that this is a worthy cause, helping our wounded soldiers," he was quoted by the news source as saying.

Mr Armstrong and fellow fundraiser Dave Simpson intend to secure more money at a charity night in Blyth next month, which will include a disco, live music and raffles.

A similar challenge was also undertaken by 15 individuals – including one former soldier – from the Swindon area, who tackled a 46-mile course on two wheels, local newspaper the Advertiser reports.
