Single soldiers hoping to find a suitable partner might be best advised to look for love on the internet.

This is because the popularity of online dating has swelled in recent years and "it appears everybody's doing it", according to Jackie Dillon of Worlds Breaking News.

The expert described digital courtship as "the internet's third colossal application, right behind email and the web".

She explained how the practice has moved on from the secretive days of newspaper advertisements, noting internet liaisons have now become mainstream.

Billboards promote the practice and ads encouraging singles to give it a go can be found on television, at sports games and even on park benches, Ms Dillon observed.

She added some users are attaching their online dating aliases in emails to act as a form of internet calling cards.

The Mirror recently reported Hazel Carter met her future husband via the world wide web – unaware Dominic Green was already a caretaker at the school where she worked.
