Members of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth are going to support soldiers with a 10.5-mile swim around Lake Windermere.

The 21 divers will head to the Lake District for the challenge, which will raise money for Help for Heroes and Project Vernon, Portsmouth.co.uk reported.

Each of the Royal Navy service personnel will complete the swim on September 25th, with the whole event expected to take eight hours.

"This is something that we have wanted to do for a while and, being divers, a sponsored swim was the most obvious way of raising some money," organiser chief petty officer John Ravenhall told the news provider.

Project Vernon is aiming to build a permanent monument to HMS Vernon, the former Diving and Mine Warfare School at Gunwharf Quays.

A more relaxing charity event took place in Potters Bar earlier this month to raise money to support soldiers.

Nearly £7,000 was raised through a golf tournament at Potters Bar Golf Club, the Watford Observer said.
