A football match and family fun day has helped raise money for a soldiers’ charity.

Help for Heroes is set to receive around £2,000 from the event, The York Press reports.

The encounter saw the 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment take on Britannia FC – a local pub side from Tancaster.

It was organised by former soldier Phil Zealand, who claimed to have been inspired to make a contribution after seeing wounded troops returning home.

Mr Zealand is a former member of the 1st Battalion the Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire and also played for and managed Britannia FC.

The game, played at the home ground of Tadcaster Albion, finished 1-1, but the army side triumphed after a 4-2 victory on penalties.

Around 300 people turned up for the spectacle.

A family of seven recently revealed they aim to scale Snowdon – the highest mountain in Wales – in a bid to generate cash for the Help for Heroes organisation.
