armed forces &#8216;are what this country stands for&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The armed forces are at the forefront of what Britain stands for and what it does, a council member has claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Tracey Dixon from South Tyneside Council was speaking on Armed Forces Day as the local community came out to rally behind the military, the Shields Gazette reports.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in regard to the event, the politician added: &quot;This day is so important as it gives us, the public, a chance to pay our respects and show our support for servicemen and women past and present.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>As well as marking Armed Force Day, the get-together also commemorated the 150th anniversary of South Shields Territorial Army.<\/p>\n<p>The soldiers of 205 Battery and 3rd Durham Volunteer Artillery, both currently serving and those that had served before, gathered at St Michael&rsquo;s Church in the region&rsquo;s centre for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup recently revealed it means a great deal for troops to see their work overseas is appreciated back home.<\/p>\n<p>Posted by Mark Wilkins<br><img decoding=\"async\"
