Edinburgh could be playing host to Armed Forces Day in 2011, it has been revealed.

The city is one of two cities vying for the honour – the other being Belfast – newsscotsman.com reports.

It is an event that is expected to attract thousands of Britons keen to show their support for the military and 2010’s event will be taking place tomorrow (June 25th) in Cardiff.

Hosting the spectacle could mean a number of big military and public figures, including the Queen, may descend on Edinburgh next year.

Lord Provost George Grubb commented: "It would be a tremendous honour for Edinburgh to be chosen to host the 2011 events."

He added the city would start preparations immediately to ensure a "spectacular occasion".

Another parade taking place on Armed Forces Day this year will be occurring in South Cheshire when local residents will be welcoming back 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment.
