<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Armed Forces charity SSAFA has announced that it is appointing Lieutenant General Sir Andrew Gregory KBE CB as chief executive at the end of August 2016.<\/p>\n
Sir Andrew retired from the British Army earlier this year after 35 years of service. His most recent role was as chief of defence people at the Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n
He is set to succeed air vice marshal David Murray in this position who has now been appointed as controller of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.<\/p>\n
Speaking on his new position, Sir Andrew said: "Having assisted over 61,000 people last year, through the efforts of its committed employees and 7,000 dedicated volunteers, I look forward to taking on the excellent work of my predecessor, David Murray, to whom I pay great tribute."<\/p>\n
In this role, Sir Andrew will be helping to aid veterans and their families in ways that are practical.<\/p>\n
This is a real pillar of strength and support for those who are in the Regular and Reserve Armed Forces. Often, those who leave the military can find it difficult to assimilate into civilian life, which is why charities of this nature are such a lifeline in this work.<\/p>\n
What's even better is having a seasoned Lieutenant General, such as Sir Gregory sit in charge of this position, as someone who can offer hands-on help to veterans.<\/p>\n
It's hoped that with this new change, the SSAFA will be able to help more people who have left the armed forces.<\/p>\n
Sir Kevin O'Donoghue, chairman of SSAFA, said: "Sir Andrew's diverse experience is ideally suited to ensuring that SSAFA continues to provide essential support to the Armed Forces community and is able to respond to its changing needs."<\/p>\n
