Anyone who has ever sat down for a game of Cluedo or even Snakes and Ladders will know that a simple board game can often bring out the competitive and argumentative side in even the happiest families.

However, no matter how much you might get into a game, you probably haven't taken the rules as literally as 21-year old Alyssa Ferraro of Hooksett, New Hampshire in the US, who went straight to jail after a game of Monopoly with her boyfriend got somewhat heated.

Ms Ferraro and her unnamed boyfriend were enjoying a game of the capitalists' favourite when it all got a little serious and ended with her slapping her boyfriend in the face.

Hooksett officers were called to the scene as a result of a domestic disturbance report. When they arrived, she told them that an argument had broken out over a game of Monopoly, during which she had lashed out.

"She got into an argument with her boyfriend over a game of Monopoly and open-hand slapped him in the face," according to a police statement obtained by CBS Boston.

The red-faced Ms Ferraro was charged with domestic violence-related simple assault and went straight to jail, en-route to which she neither passed Go nor collected £200.

And far from making her fortune on the Monopoly board, Ms Ferraro found herself rather substantially out of pocket when she was bailed for $2,000 (£1,268). We're guessing it may be some time until the Monopoly board makes another appearance in her house.

Amazingly, this isn't the first time in recent weeks that a board game related dispute has got somewhat out of hand. American police were recently called to a trailer park in Utah after a phone call from a 17-year old girl, whose father pointed a gun at her following an argument over a game of Battleships.
