At this time of year, most of us will be aware of the fact that the common house spider is ready to come out, sit on our walls and wait to give us that little fright that will leave the heart racing for hours after.

However, we arachnophobes in the UK should thank our lucky stars that we're not the Trost family from Missouri, who not only had to deal with a spider staring down at them from their walls, but rather 6,000 of them invading their home.

Brian and Susan Trost from Weldon Spring in the state had to move themselves and their four children out of the home while it was fumigated to kill the 6,000 brown recluse spiders, which are venomous and can leave a nasty bite on humans.

The spiders were so plentiful that the family has described them as "bleeding from the walls", with Mrs Trost talking of a particularly harrowing event when a brown recluse spider dropped on her while she was in the shower, leaving her having to try to avoid it.

The Trost family has since taken the previous owners of the house to court, citing a failure to disclose a huge spider problem when they were selling the property. However, despite the courts granting them an amount equal to what they paid for the home, they have yet to receive any money as the previous owners went bankrupt.

Perhaps mercifully, the home has since been sold to a mortgage company, leaving the Trosts able to move to a new property, hopefully without residents with fangs.

Elsewhere in weird news, a comedy show in New York had a unique incident of heckling this week, when police officers arresting a member of the audience during the main event shouted at performer Adam Newman for referencing their presence.

Mr Newman was part of the way through his set when he saw police officers shining torches into the audience before they waded in and slapped some handcuffs on an attendee. Needless to say, the rest of the show relied heavily on material centering around the unusual arrival of the officers and their heckling.
