Help for Heroes is being supported by the mayor of Ramsey in Cambridgeshire.

According to the Huntingdon, St Ives & St Neots News & Crier, 61-year-old Cllr Ian Curtis wants to bring in £1,000 for the service charity and local cancer group Acorn.

He underwent a head shaving recently for these two causes, and told the news provider that if he was able to bring in £1,500, some of the cash will go towards a youth group.

Helen, the mayor's wife, came close to getting her head shaved too, after volunteering to take part.

However, Penninton Properties' Paul Sinclair took her place and had his hair shaved instead.

“It went very well on the day and we raised £50 in a bucket when we were having it done," the mayor has told the news provider.

He made the decision that the hair-loss activity would be good for bringing in cash for good causes after he became mayor for the second year.

He told the news provider that he's not gone as short as he did in the charity event before. Indeed, at one stage, when he was a semi-pro football player during the 70s, his hair was long enough to reach his shoulders.

Thus far the head shave has brought in £700 in funds, with fellow shavee Paul Sinclair lending his support to the same fund.

It comes after the Dover Express reported that Help for Heroes has had close to £900 raised for it by fundraisers at a local Asda store.

A total of £886 was brought in by Dover Army Cadets, with Yvonne Chilcott, who was involved in the event with Kirsty, her daughter, telling the news provider following the collection activity: "The weather was dreadful and we couldn't go outside. Imagine how much we could have raised if it wasn't raining. But the support we had was lovely."

Help for Heroes helps people who have faced illness and injury in the course of service, and their families.
