Help for Heroes is being supported by a veteran's 90th birthday walk.

The Northamptonshire Telegraph reported on June 17th that Maynard Follett was walking a distance of 90 miles over the course of a month, in the run up to today (July 1st), which is his the day he turns 90.

The cash raised from the charity walk will be going to Help for Heroes, which he's spent a number of years supporting.

The veteran's aim was to bring in £1,000 through the activity, via sponsorship and collecting, according to the news provider.

But his Just Giving page shows that he's well past this target, and at present has brought in a massive £1,649.

Mr Follet saw service in Italy, India, Greece and North Africa during World War II.

He told the news provider that he wanted to mark his birthday, but not with a party or presents, so the walk was a way of giving more to Help for Heroes.

"It’s just three miles a day but I have to fit it in with other things I am doing, like going to the hospital and appointments," he said.

The veteran, who is also taking donations via text message, said that people have proven supportive of the walk, with people in gardens asking about the activity, and then donating.

On June 25th, The Plymouth Herald reported that a group of primary school children from the city had taken a rather shorter walk to support Help for Heroes.

Their efforts, which of course were still very important, saw the pupils take a mile-long walk for the charity.

As well as Help for Heroes, this helped the Victoria Road Primary School fund.

The trip also included a stop-off at the American Navy D-Day memorial.
