Television adventurer Bear Grylls has demonstrated his support for members of the armed forces by taking part in a sponsored run for Help for Heroes.

The survival expert joined more than 200 joggers to attempt the 14-mile run to raise money for the charity, which provides assistance to soldiers who have been wounded in battle, the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald reported.

He explained that the cause is one that is very close to his heart, after he was wounded while serving in the army.

"They do extraordinary work and I try to do as much as I can for them through various expeditions and supporting local events," he said.

However, Bear Grylls was not the only participant to raise money for the charity. 14-year-old schoolboy Martin Andre single-handedly raised £400 in sponsorship funds.

Members of staff from Beverley Ambulance Station in East Yorkshire recently raised £2,500 for Help for Heroes by taking part in the rather unusual activity of a sponsored bed push.
