A team has been set up to raise money for Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion by climbing the Welsh mountains.

Four friends from Buntingford in Hertfordshire will take on the Welsh 3000s challenge, which involves covering 30 miles over mountains within the Snowdonia National Park, reports the Hertfordshire Mercury.

It lasts for 24 hours and their task is to scale the peaks of 15 mountains, each of which is more than 3,000 ft.

Sion Simpson, 26, is one of those taking part and he said: "Sadly one of my friends committed suicide after leaving the army, so both of the charities which help soldiers are close to my heart."

The initial target set by the group was to raise £2,000, but they are now set to exceed that total comfortably.

All of the four men involved in the challenge have a personal link to the military, having either served themselves or know someone who has.
