Veterans staying at a Help for Heroes recovery centre in Catterick Garrison recently engaged in a spot of baking in a bid to raise money for the charity.

The former military men and women took on the challenge of baking and decorating a showstopper cake as part of the Colossal Cake Sale, reports the Northern Echo.

Six individuals took part in total, with the prize for the winner set as a chocolate egg from the Little Chocolate Shop in Leyburn.

Shane McConnell, an RAF veteran, was one of those involved and he made a lemon cake as part of the project.

"I have learnt a few new techniques like lining the cake tins and not going too deep when you grate the lemon as you don't want to use the pith," he explained.

However, he did not do enough to win the contest, with that honour instead going to former Royal Artillery member Richard Piggott.
