Police in the US have moved to arrest a man they believe is a thief after simply following his footsteps left in the snow.

Collin Thomas Ferguson was detained in Texas after cops followed a series of prints that led them to the suspected robber.

The police had initially been called about a vehicle theft in which a man was seen in a parked car.

After that, the suspect was known to have fled the scene, only to return to pick up a mobile phone he had dropped.

When they arrived, the officers quickly realised there was a trail of footprints in the snow that had been left by the person responsible. Upon following them, they found Mr Ferguson hiding in a separate vehicle.

He has now been charged with four counts of burglary and a separate charge of possession of a controlled substance.
