A Wigan man has been crowned the fastest pie eater in the world after winning a recent competition.

Ian Coulton took just over a minute to devour his food at the World Pie Eating Championship, meaning he won the title.

The victory is particularly pleasing for Mr Coulton as the contest took place in his home town – and he admitted he was not expecting to be the winner.

"At one stage I didn't think I was going to win but I really enjoyed the whole thing," he told Wigan Today.

Mr Coulton went on to note that he already has a signed Lancashire cricket bat on his mantelpiece at home and this award "will look excellent alongside it".

Organiser Tony Callaghan got the event underway with a cry of 'get eating' and the competitors then tucked into their pies, with Mr Coulton's achievement of one minute and 6.61 seconds the slowest ever winning time.
