Running the gruelling London Marathon is something that many people cannot even contemplate doing, but nearly 600 kind-hearted athletes took part in the event to raise a staggering £1 million for the Help for Heroes charity.

The Sun reports that not only was this figure double the amount raised last year but a number of former members of the armed forces took to the streets of the capital city to raise money for the cause.

Former marine Ben McBean, who is a double amputee, had to adjust his prosthetic leg at the 14-mile mark and suffered from cramps, back pain and blisters but finished the gruelling 26-mile run with the support of the crowd.

"Every part of my body is in agony except my eyeballs," he told the publication.

"That was so tough but the crowds were amazing. I had no choice but to keep going and going."

Elsewhere, the Swindon Advertiser reported that on Friday (April 23rd) the town’s residents took part in a day of St George’s celebrations to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.
