A raccoon has remarkably survived an entire month at sea by eating nothing but cardboard.

The creature, who has been named Meeko, managed to find his way into a container in Davenport, Iowa, US and was subsequently sent by rail to Halifax in Canada, before being put on a boat to Liverpool, explained the Metro.

Once the cargo arrived in Merseyside, it was driven to Ebbw Vale in south Wales, where staff discovered the raccoon amongst their machine parts order.

Jan Garen, who has housed Meeko at Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary, said: "She is getting used to us but she has had a rough ride. She was locked in that container for four weeks and somehow survived by drinking condensation and eating cardboard."

Ms Garen went on to explain it was obvious Meeko was not a pet and had been living in the wild until finding her way on to the ship and sailing across the North Atlantic.
