Single soldiers who are looking for love may be wise to try online dating, after a new study has revealed one in four adults have used the internet to find a partner.

The Australian poll undertaken by Nielson shows online dating is becoming a more mainstream activity, with 62 per cent of those looking for love on the internet being successful, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Some 3,057 people were questioned for the survey – 62 per cent said they were seeking a serious relationship, while others admitted to looking solely for friendship or sex.

Lija Jarvis, marketing director of the Fairfax Digital Group, advises internet dating is not something to be embarrassed of.

"That stigma has definitely dropped because people are advocating for it, talking with their friends, sharing stories with families," she states.

Big News recently suggested single soldiers may be able to find an "excellent" love match on a social networking site.
