A man who is still fit enough to win medals in athletics events in his 70s could lose a title over claims he has lied about his age.

Jhalman Singh, 78, was on the podium twice at the recent British Masters Athletic Federation in Birmingham.

He secured a bronze medal in the long jump and the shot putt, but it has since emerged that he may be older than he actually claims to be.

While this does not affect his results in the West Midlands, it does mean he may be ineligible for a pentathlon gold medal he won in the 70-74 category in 2010.

An administrative error has revealed Mr Singh is three years older than he thought and the man, who spent his school days in India, explained he does not have a birth certificate so made a mistake.

It means he may well have to think twice about what age categories he enters at his next athletics meeting.
