Tens of thousands of people appear to be willing to give up life on Earth for good in order to have the chance of residing on Mars.

A new and ambitious reality television project is looking for people to be part of a human settlement on the Red Planet by 2023.

Non-profit organisation Mars One is behind the scheme and is on the hunt for suitable candidates, all of whom will be required to train for seven years before heading into Space.

They would never return to Earth, but despite this fact more than 78,000 people have already put their names forward.

Bas Lansdorp, co-founder and chief executive officer of Mars One, said: "Mars One is a mission representing all humanity and its true spirit will be justified only if people from the entire world are represented."

He believes more than 500,000 individuals will apply to be part of the project by the time the deadline of August 31st passes.
