A council has blamed the painting of double yellow lines just inches apart on a contractor, who it said appeared to be unable to work out just how wide cars are.

Residents in Swindon reacted in bemusement when they noticed a 60ft long path that is just four feet wide had been adorned with double yellow lines.

As the route is barely wide enough to fit a motorcycle, and would have no chance of accommodating a car, many felt it had been a waste of time and money.

"It seems that our contractors forgot just how big cars actually are when they painted this one," admitted a spokesman for Swindon Council.

The two yellow lines have just 13 inches of space between them, which is enough to fit in just one tyre on a supercar.

Local man Ray Mudhar described the incident as "one of the stupidest things I've ever seen".
