In some parts of the world it might be fashionable to wear trousers hanging below the waist, but in one town in the US it will lead young men straight into trouble with the law.

Terreborne Parish in Louisiana has made it illegal to wear baggy trousers and the punishments include a fine and community service.

A first offence will result in a $50 (£33) penalty, but anybody who repeats the offence will be hit with a $100 charge and a third time will result in another $100 fine and 16 hours of community service.

Jerome Boykin, a chief at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said: "There is nothing positive about people wearing saggy pants. This is not a black issue, this is not a white issue, this is a people issue."

Some local residents have already admitted they are unhappy about the rule, which could lead to "social differences".
