A man has made an incredible four-mile journey over shark-infested waters using only the power from helium balloons.

Matt Silver-Vallance, 37, strapped himself to a bunch of the balloons and took off over the waters in aid of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.

The aim of the stunt was to raise money for the charity to put towards building a new children's hospital in Johannesburg.

Speaking about his experience, Mr Silver-Vallance explained: "I was going up and I got to about 1,000 feet [above sea level], about the height of Table Mountain. Then I started coming down again, that's when it got hairy."

In total, he spent about an hour in the air and passed across 3.7 miles of the Atlantic Ocean, where sharks are routinely found.

As a tribute to Mandela's work, he even started the challenge from the island where the former South African president was detained for 18 years.
