A number of jobseekers have shown their ambition by using networking site LinkedIn to apply for the position of Pope, which is currently vacant.

Some 30 applications for the role were received after a spoof advert was placed for the job as the head of the Catholic Church.

The posting offered an executive a fresh challenge and a "great opportunity", while it requested candidates who had excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work on Sundays.

"Here at the Vatican, we take equal opportunities serious. People from all ethnicities and backgrounds will be considered, unless you are, of course, a woman," the advert read.

Despite the offer clearly being a hoax, it seems a number of people were keen to play along with the joke and submitted their details in the hope of landing the role.

The position of Pope is currently up for grabs since Benedict XVI announced he was retiring from the job earlier this year.
