Garrett McNamara has successfully surfed a wave that has been measured at 78 ft.

The American took down the monster wave off the coast of Portugal and experts are now looking to verify the feat to see if it is indeed a world record.

When asked about the experience by ABC, Mr McNamara – who holds the current mark for riding the highest wave – compared it to snowboarding on a giant mountain as he ended up going so fast.

"You're just chattering, flying down this bumpy, bumpy mountain. Your brain is getting rattled. Your whole body is getting rattled," he added.

While it sounds like great fun, I wouldn't recommend anyone to just take up the sport and try to take down a wave this size.

Mr McNamara has been surfing since he was 11 and turned professional when he was 17, so the man clearly has some skills.
