A former army soldier has raised over £16,000 for Help for Heroes by completing more than 50 marathons.

Simon Buckden had originally planned to run 100 marathons in 100 weeks in order to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but had to call time on this after he was diagnosed with cancer, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

While he has successfully undergone treatment for the disease, the veteran has still chosen to hang up his trainers for good.

"The challenge was never about the marathons, the marathons were a platform to create greater awareness of PTSD," Mr Buckden stated.

He added he is determined to do all he can to make sure people understand the condition and is currently trying to create a national PTSD awareness day.

Mr Buckden has also set up the Roundhay Park Run, which will be held for the second time later this year.
