Escaping from prison is supposed to be very tricky.

These state-of-the-art penitentiaries are designed to hold the most dangerous people in captivity.

However, a trio of inmates have made a mockery of the system in France when they launched a daring escape by using a table leg, Reuters reports.

Incredibly, they were able to make a hole in the roof of their cell at the Colmar prison in eastern France using the piece of furniture.

After this, they made their way into the adjoining courthouse, before making a dash for it out a side door.

Prosecutor Bernard Lebeau said: "It appears that the ceilings in the cells are made of a crumbly material that was attacked with a makeshift tool made of objects from the cell itself, notably a table leg."

This case highlights how conditions at the prison could do with being improved, or else everyone will be looking for a spare table.
