Older people should not be afraid to go online in their efforts to find love.

Research by Age UK has found that 62 per cent of over-65s think it is important to have a romantic partner in later life.

On top of this, 12 per cent said they are actively seeking love, with the top reason for this being they wanted someone special to share their life with.

Relationship expert Donna Dawson commented: "The need to love and be loved, whether by a friend or a partner, does not change as we grow older."

Lucy Harmer, head of information and advice at Age UK, said there is evidence that social networks are becoming increasingly popular for older people looking for companionship.

Because of this, she thinks it is important that over-65s learn how to use the internet, as without this skill they could get left behind in the love stakes.
