How much would you be willing to pay for a Christmas tree?

The festive period is usually a time of real family celebration and there is always one house in every street that goes all out in terms of their decorations.

However, even they would struggle to cope with a jewellery store in downtown Tokyo, Japan, which has put up a tree that is worth 350 million yen (£2.6 million).

Made of 88 pounds of pure gold, it stands nearly eight feet high and three feet in diameter and is a truly astonishing sight.

It took ten craftsmen some two months to complete the design and if it doesn't get people in the mood for Christmas, then nothing will.

Takashi Miura, a 36-year-old jeweller, described the tree as "very vivid".

However, I can't see too many households splashing out for the tree, or the cheaper version, which still costs two million yen.
