The traditional blind date is becoming a relic of the past because of the increasing popularity of the internet.

Thanks in part to the introduction of online dating, only three per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds have gone out with someone after a recommendation from their friends or family in the past five years.

It seems that single individuals no longer like to wait for the initial meeting to find out information about suitors and prefer to arrange a rendezvous through the web instead.

The LoveGeist report also found that 62 per cent of people go on social media sites in an effort to discover more about their dates.

Relationship expert Kate Taylor said: "Technology has changed the way we date. With so much information about potential partners right at our fingertips … it's understandable that we don't want to leave who we date up to chance."

She added individuals are starting to spend much more time picking the type of person they are going out with.
