A retired army man is going to run 300 miles as part of charity fundraising challenge.

Martyn Bird will make his way from the Thiepval First World War memorial in France to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire, the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald reports.

All of the money he collects will go towards the Royal British Legion (RBL), which has been helping armed forces personnel for over 90 years.

On his journey, Mr Bird will carry the Baton, which is made from the handle of a stretcher used to carry casualties in Afghanistan and has a message about sacrifice inscribed on it.

"This is by far the biggest challenge I've ever faced. The most important thing now is to get the event as much publicity as possible," he added.

Lieutenant Colonel Geoff Minto and a relay of army cadets are going to accompany Mr Bird on the challenge.
